MICS

MICS General Information

The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) is an international household survey program developed and supported by UNICEF. MICS provides countries with statistically reliable and internationally comparable data on key indicators related to women of reproductive age, children and households.

MICS, being one of the largest survey programs, has been implemented since 1995, and more than 300 surveys have been conducted in 118 countries in the past years.

The Order dated August 17, 2022 on the establishment of the Steering Committee in connection with the conduction of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) was signed by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The main objective of national MICS is to generate relevant data for the assessment of the progress made in various areas regarding the situation of children and women in Azerbaijan and to identify areas that require more attention. Also, the tasks of MICS include monitoring the achievement of the goals set in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and collecting disaggregated data to allow for evidence-based policy-making.

MICS in Azerbaijan

UNICEF has extensive experience in conducting MICS for more than 30 years. The Government of Azerbaijan has taken important steps in conducting the MICS and UNICEF provides all necessary support to the government with this task.

According to the subparagraph 5.1.3.1 of the “State Program on Improvement of Official Statistics in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2018-2025”, approved by Order No. 3672 of 14 February 2018 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, conducting the MICS will allow the assessment of some 200 indicators – on topics ranging from maternal and child well-being, health, nutrition, foundational learning skills (children aged 7-14), child and adult functioning, water quality, social transfers, use of clean fuels and technology in the country.

The “Memorandum of Understanding on conducting the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2022” was signed between the UNICEF Representative to Azerbaijan and the State Statistical Committee (SSC). 12320 households have been identified for conducting the upcoming MICS in Azerbaijan.

Fieldwork

MICS is conducted by teams of 4 interviewers, 1 measurer and 1 supervisor assigned to visit a specific number of households. On visiting households, interviewers will present an information sheet that provides general information about what the MICS survey is and why it is being conducted in Azerbaijan. Interviewers will visit selected households in May-July.
